Colony Study in time for Columbus Day

It's Columbus Day and LHS 5th-Graders in Mr. Matthew Bruce's Social Studies classes have been studying explorers and the colonies. They experienced a STEM lesson by building their own forts for their colony settlement. Each group, led by a governor, put themselves in the shoes of the explorers to protect their stake, all having different land and circumstances. The settlers experienced many challenges with violent attacks, famine, lack of resources, and weather. They also learned how to adapt, cope, problem solve, and repair. They learned that it didn't hurt to have a little luck along the way. This lesson was hands-on and fully engaged students as they had to cooperate to live and be successful each day. Mr. Bruce's awesome lesson will be reinforced as students study the maps of the colonies and learn about the economics of day-to-day life. Thank you, Mr. Bruce, for this engaging STEM lesson! You're in the right place!
