Texas Bluebonnet Winner!

LIS students, along with 63,331 other 3rd through 6th graders in more than 1,300 Texas school districts voted on the 2022 Texas Bluebonnet Winning Book! The winning book for LIS was Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera by Candice Fleming. But the winner of the 2022 Texas Bluebonnet Award is The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read, written by Rita Lorraine Hubbard and illustrated by Oge Mora. The Oldest Student shares the true story of Mary Walker and her remarkable life. In 1848, Mary Walker was born into slavery, was freed, was married, and worked numerous jobs. But at 116 she learned to read and became one of her city’s most beloved citizens. LIS students loved this book too! LIS Librarian, Abi Swain is having dinner with Rita Lorraine Hubbard at the library convention and learning more about the meaning behind this book so that she can come back and share more with her students. LISD is always so proud when our educators learn more to teach better! You're in the right place!
